$16.99$500.00

Express Mail : Grand Island Ice Caves Forever Stamp 2020

2020 welcomed the issuance of the Grand Island Ice Caves stamp as part of the esteemed American Landmarks Series, capturing the mesmerizing winter phenomenon nestled along the shores of Lake Superior.

The stamp serves as a homage to the natural splendor of the Grand Island Ice Caves, showcasing a digital illustration portraying an ice cave overlooking Lake Superior at sunset, skillfully crafted by artist Dan Cosgrove.

Although there was no formal national First Day of Issue Ceremony, the stamp received its inaugural cancellation from Munising, Michigan, a locale proximate to Grand Island on Michigan??s Upper Peninsula.

Initiated with the release of stamps featuring Mount Rushmore and Hoover Dam in 2008, the American Landmarks Series has since become a beloved collection of Priority and Express Mail stamps, each illustrating vibrant images of iconic American locales, masterfully envisioned by digital artist Dan Cosgrove.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula boasts some of the state's most breathtaking vistas, with the rugged sandstone cliffs along Lake Superior's shoreline sculpted by groundwater seeping through rock crevices, creating the awe-inspiring ice caves during the winter months.

While numerous ice caves dot Lake Superior's expanse, Grand Island hosts some of the most remarkable formations. Accessed via a challenging mile-long trek across frozen Lake Superior from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, visitors embark on a journey fraught with icy winds and unpredictable conditions.

Yet, for those fortunate enough to brave the elements, the reward is unparalleled. Towering ice formations, reaching heights of up to 80 feet, await exploration within the caves, their crystalline walls casting an ethereal blue hue, a testament to the remarkable beauty of nature's icy handiwork.
